For international students, meeting the English language requirements is an essential step toward securing admission to UK universities. Most institutions require proof of language proficiency through globally recognised tests such as IELTS, PTE, TOEFL iBT, or Duolingo English Test. Among these, the IELTS Academic test remains the most widely accepted across the UK. Universities typically ask for an overall IELTS score between 5.5 and 7.0, depending on the course level and subject. Programs in fields such as Medicine, Law, and Nursing may require higher band scores, especially in writing and speaking.
The UK is an English speaking country and all university courses are taught in English. English is the main language used for communication inside and outside universities. The level of the English required of students depends largely on the course they aim to study but different universities have different language requirements. The most common means of fulfilling that requirement is through IELTS.
Not only does the ability to use English as a language help students obtain admission in their desired university smoothly, the proof that they can speak and understand English to a required level is fundamental to their visa application also. Although English is taught as an additional subject in many non-English speaking countries, while there are many institutions in those countries where all the subjects are taught in English, thus making it’s far easier for students to achieve that required level in IELTS, for some student’s it can be a challenging task, especially those who have had limited opportunities to use English.
At Johndee Education, we guide students in understanding the exact English requirements for their chosen universities and programmes. Entry criteria vary not only by institution but also by degree type, so choosing the right test and preparing effectively can make a big difference. We help students interpret score requirements, plan test dates, and decide whether a pre-sessional English course is a better pathway—especially for those who slightly fall short of the required scores.
Many students worry about the IELTS test, but with the right preparation it is entirely manageable. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System offered by Cambridge through British Council and IDP Australia which aims to test four different skills of the test takers namely Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading. It’s a complicated exam and requires focus and good preparation. We at Johndee Education provide students free of cost study material and guidance to prepare for and attempt the test.
We encourage students to practise all four skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—regularly. Using English daily through reading articles, watching English-language media, and speaking with friends can significantly boost confidence. Joining an IELTS preparation course or working with qualified tutors can also help students understand the test format and improve their overall performance. Most importantly, students should give themselves enough time to prepare rather than rushing to take the exam at the last minute. Some of the areas where we assist our students in are:
- Suggest suitable English language courses according to their requirements
- Connect students with suitable language providers to improve their skills
- Connect students with certified tutors who provide tailor-made lessons and courses
- Offer students advice on how to prepare and best attempt the IELTS test to achieve best scores
- Recommend sources for self-study and practice English language
- Offer guidance on how to constantly use and improve their English language
If you are unsure which English test is best for you, or whether your current score meets university standards, Johndee Education is here to help. We provide personalised advice, preparation guidance, and application support to ensure your English skills meet the requirements for a successful study journey in the UK.
Using English as a Language
Being able to speak, read, write and understand English is an essential skill regardless of what you are studying. We advise our students to make English language a part of their everyday life by speaking English casually with their friends and family, listening to English radios, especially talk shows, writing proper English, especially in texts and emails focusing more on the correctness of their sentences than the short cut message they are sending, and making reading a daily habit whether its books, blogs or even social media feeds.
